Getting Started with Raspberry Pi

First of all let’s see what you need

  • Obviously a Raspberry Pi
  • Stable power supply
  • 8GB micro SD card (anything more than 4GB is okay)
  • Monitor or TV
  • HDMI Cable (If you are using a old monitor get a HDMI to VGA cable)
  • Raspberry Pi Casing – optional
  • If you are using an old raspberry pi model get a Wi-Fi adapter or a Ethernet cable. Edimax EW-7811Un Wi-Fi adapter will be a great choice.
  • A USB mouse and a USB Keyboard
  • Micro SD card reader

The RPi use a micro USB for power and it is really important to get a good power supply. If you are using a Raspberry Pi 3 then you cannot supply power with USB power like charging your mobile. Don’t use your mobile phone charger because different mobile phones have different voltages and ampere values. These different values may harm your RPi. What I recommend is to get a charger with 5V and 2.5A as shown below.

This chart shows the different power usages in different raspberry pi models.

If all thing are ready Let’s go 😀

Setting up the micro sd card

  1. Insert the micro sd card into the USB card reader and connect it to computer
  2. Download the SD Formatter 4.0 and install it in your computer.
  3. Using the SD Formatter 4.0 format the micro sd card.
  4. Download the operating system which you wish to install in the RPi. For beginners it is recommend to use NOOBS By using NOOBS you can easily install Raspbian OS, which is the recommend operating system by www.RaspberryPi.org. It is a large file and will take a while to complete.
  5. Extract the NOOBS.zip file and copy all the files inside the NOOBS folder and paste into the formatted micro sd card.
  6. Remove the card reader from the computer.
  7. Remove the micro sd card from the card reader.

Setting up the Raspberry Pi

  1. Insert the micro sd card into the card slot which is located in under the Raspberry PI.
  2. Plug the USB keyboard and the USB mouse to the USB ports in the raspberry pi.
  3. Turn on the monitor (or TV) and connect the HDMI or VGA cable to the monitor.
  4. Connect the HDMI port end to the Raspberry Pi.
  5. Connect the Ethernet cable to your router and other end to the Raspberry Pi. Alternately, connect the Wi-Fi adapter to the USB port if you are using an old Raspberry Pi.
  6. Connect the power cable to micro usb port.
  7. Plug the power supply to the power outlet and this will turn on the Raspberry Pi.
  8. Now you can see the red led begin to glow indicating that the power is on.

How to install the Raspbian Operating system

Once you have successfully followed the steps above, a start screen will appear on your monitor or TV.

    1. Select Raspbian.
    2. Click Install.
    3. Then click Yes in the warning message and wait until the installation process completes.
    4. After that the Raspbian OS will automatically begin to reboot and bunch of code lines will appear in the screen. Don’t be afraid! It’s the nature of the OS. 😀
    5. Congratulations! You have successfully installed the Raspbian OS 🙂
    6. To configure the Raspberry Pi click Menu in the upper left corner of the screen. Then select Preference —> Raspberry Pi Configuration.

Try these steps and set up the Raspberry Pi. Good Luck People! 😀
